Here comes the rain!

Working late tonight. The clouds just keep getting darker and darker. I didn't realize Ivan had made this much distance since hitting land. I should probably make it inside before the downpours come.

OH that reminds me I had better empty out the Subaru before it pisses it down.

URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST REQUESTED
FLOOD STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAUNTON
MA340 PM EDT FRI SEP 17 2004
...DRENCHING RAINS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ARE ANTICIPATED OVER A LARGE PORTION OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND BY LATE SATURDAY AFTERNOON...THE AXIS OF THE HEAVIEST RAIN IS EXPECTED TO LIE EAST TO WEST WITHIN ABOUT 40 MILES OF THE MASS TURNPIKE.THE ARRIVING REMNANTS OF IVAN...COMBINING WITH A WINTERLIKE SCENARIO OF COLD HIGH PRESSURE DEVELOPING TO OUR NORTH...IS SETTING UP A HEAVY RAIN PATTERN THAT WILL SLOW TRAVEL...ESPECIALLY BETWEEN MIDNIGHT TONIGHT AND 3 PM SATURDAY. THE MAIN FACTOR REDUCING THE POTENTIAL FOR WIDESPREAD STREAM FLOODING IS THE BASICALLY DRY WEEK WE HAVE JUST EXPERIENCED. HOWEVER...THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE ONE OR TWO STREAMS MAY RISE TO BANK FULL OR JUST ABOVE...IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS LATE SATURDAY MORNING...ESPECIALLY IF RAINFALL EXCEEDS 5 INCHES IN A 12 HOUR PERIOD. RECENTLY...OTHER THAN SOUTH COASTAL NEW ENGLAND YESTERDAY WHICH HAD ONE HALF TO 1 INCH OF RAIN IN A FEW SPOTS...THE LAST HEAVY RAIN IN SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THE REMAINS OF FRANCIS AWEEK AGO...ON THE 8TH AND 9TH.THE CURRENT SITUATION LOOKS MORE POTENT FOR OUR AREA OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND...WITH RAINS SURE TO CAUSE POOR DRAINAGE STREET FLOODING AT TIMES...ESPECIALLY IN MASSACHUSETTS. THE HEAVY RAINS HAVE ALREADY STARTED IN ISOLATED LOCATIONS OFNORTHWEST MASSACHUSETTS AND SOUTHWEST NEW HAMPSHIRE THIS AFTERNOON .THE AXIS OF HEAVY RAIN WILL DEVELOP SOUTHWARD LATE TONIGHT...PROBABLY REACHING NORTHERN CONNECTICUT BY DAWN... AND THEREAFTER...THE ENTIRE INTERSTATE 95 CORRIDOR FROM NEWBURYPORT TO BOSTON...ON DOWN TO PROVIDENCE AND WESTERLY RHODE ISLAND DURING THE DAYLIGHT HOURS SATURDAY. THE CAPE AND ISLANDS WILL BE THE LAST TO RECEIVE HEAVY RAIN...PROBABLY RESERVED FOR THE SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS THERE...JUST AS STRONG AND CHILLY NORTH WINDS ARRIVE.OVERALL...A NASTY SATURDAY IS ANTICIPATED FOR MUCH OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING AT TIMES INTO THE UPPER 50S...SOME20 DEGREES COLDER THAN TODAY. IF YOU PLAN ON CAMPING...HIKING OR YOU LIVE ALONG A FLOOD PRONE STREAM...BE PREPARED TO MOVE AWAY FROM RAPIDLY RISING STREAM FLOWS. STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR LOCAL MEDIA FOR UPDATES ON THIS DEVELOPING HEAVY RAIN EVENT.

IN ADDITION...A COLD FRONT WILL SLOWLY DRIFT INTO OUR REGION THIS AFTERNOON AND OVERNIGHT. THE COMBINATION OF THESE TWO WEATHER FEATURES...WILL RESULT IN THE POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY RAIN TONIGHT. AT THIS TIME...THE GREATEST THREAT OF HEAVY RAIN APPEARS TO BE ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE MASS PIKE. RAINFALL OF 2 TO 4 INCHES IS EXPECTED IN THIS AREA. NORTH OF THE PIKE...1 TO 3 INCHES IS FORECAST. THE TIMING OF THE COLD FRONT MOVING INTO SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND WILL DETERMINE THE SPATIAL COVERAGE AND AMOUNT OF HEAVY RAINFALL..DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN (SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY)...SWELLS FROM TROPICAL STORM JEANNE ARE EXPECTED TO REACH THE SOUTH COAST SUNDAY AND CONTINUE INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THESE SWELLS COULD RESULT IN RIP CURRENTS ALONG SOUTH FACING BEACHES OF MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND.
